I am excited to announce that I will be releasing a new activity book on Amazon next month! It’s a cupcake design book. It is my goal to create interactive children’s books and activity books that encourage creativity.
I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of a more cheerful food than a cupcake! At our house we not only love making, decorating, and eating cupcakes, but we also love drawing and coloring them. Thus was born the idea for my soon-to-be-released cupcake book.
I’ll be sharing sneak peeks and cupcake challenges between now and next month on my Instagram, so stay tuned!
In the meantime, here are some fun facts about the history of cupcakes!
A Brief History of a Small Sweet
— A cupcake is a small cake baked in a small cup-shape, generally in foil or paper and topped with icing.
— Typical cupcake ingredients include butter, sugar, flour, and eggs.
— The most popular cupcake flavor is chocolate. Vanilla comes in second, followed by strawberry and red velvet cupcakes.
— The earliest mention of a cupcake is in a cookbook published in 1796. Amelia Simmons referenced “a light cake to bake in small cups” in the cookbook American Cookery.
— Until muffin tins were widely available, cupcakes were generally baked in pottery cups or ramekins—hence the name cupcake.
— Muffin tins became widely available sometime in the first half of the 20th century, making cupcakes even more popular.
— The chocolate cupcake with the white squiggle frosting made by Hostess was the first “mass-produced” cupcake. It made its debut in 1919.
— In the 1920s cupcakes began receiving their sweet icing topping, generally with vanilla or chocolate.
— In 2005, the first bakery to exclusively make cupcakes made its debut in California. Since then Sprinkles Cupcakes has been opening shops in major cities across the nation.
— Cupcakes are a distinctly American sweet, and it is estimated that Americans eat about 770,000,000 cupcakes per year.
